W+F Bern Swiss K31 Private Series w/ Diopter & Bürgin Device - sn P404xxx
Swiss K31 Private Series carbine, manufactured for private sale in 1946, is in excellent condition with 97% finish. 5/5 Bore. 4/5 Stock. Stock and handguard matching serial numbers. Bolt matching serial number. Magazine matching serial number. Furniture has long wood grain pattern with a glossy finish from an evenly applied clear coat. There are obvious signs of handling wear, with pressure marks of various severity and some light scratching throughout the stock and handguard. On the left side of the stock, there is heavy finish wear and scratching in front of the rear sling mount caused by excessive rubbing from the sling button. To the right of the heavy wear are several small gouges and scratches. On the right side of the stock is an identification sticker from the previous owner. There is a shallow gouge above the finger groove, below the rear sight. There are light gouges on the underside of the stock near the butt, as well as heavy wear at the toe. There is a gouge in the middle of the stock, in between the rear barrel band and the end of the trigger plate. No gouging noted in the handguard.
Receiver bluing is very dark and near flawless, lacking edge wear around the loading slot. May be a refurbishment as evidenced by two small surface marks under the bluing. Rear barrel band has very light finish wear on the top side and light finish wear on the underside at the mounting screw. Front barrel band has edge wear on the left side at the hinge, light finish wear on the right side at the mounting screw and light edge wear on the bayonet lug. Bluing on the trigger plate is dark with a few areas of light finish wear. Trigger guard has light edge wear. Magazine bluing is dark with edge wear on the left and right sides.
The rear sight is a complete leaf replacement with a fine adjustment for windage and elevation.
W+F BERN K-type rear diopter mount is installed with Grünig & Elmiger front and rear diopters. The rear diopter has an adjustable iris as well as selectable filters: green, blue, yellow, clear, light grey, dark grey. The front diopter has two adjustable irises.
The normal right-handed operating rod has been replaced with a tool that allows for left-handed bolt manipulation. This device, manufactured by Burgin of Basel, Switzerland, is known as a Bürgin Device, and is extremely difficult to find today. This is a non-permanent change and can be reverted to standard right-handed operation by replacing the Bürgin Device with a standard K31 operating rod. A leather non-military sling is also included.

The Karabiner Model 1931 (K31) is a magazine fed, straight pull, bolt action rifle chambered in 7.5x55mm Swiss Gewehrpatrone 1911 (GP11) that was the standard issue rifle of the Swiss Armed Forces from 1933 through 1958. The K31 was made by Eidgenossische Waffenfabrik Bern, a Swiss federal armory, and is one of the last carbines employed by the Swiss military that is based on the designs by Schmidt and Rubin.
