Original WWII-era Swiss infantry backpack (tornister). Backpack was made by saddler F. FAS of the canton of Bern, in 1945.
Cowhide is in very good condition. Leather is in very good condition. Shoulder straps are a mix of leather and canvas, rather than full leather. The outer pocket has a small amount of missing hair on the top left and right corners of the flap, and there is a small patch of missing hair on the left side of the main flap. Underneath the main flap, there is some wear in the cowhide adjacent to the two metal strap loops. There is some discoloration and staining on the canvas of the main flap and on the canvas of the main compartment..
KMV "Privat" stamp on the inside of the main flap, indicating that this backpack was released from military service for private ownership.
Original soldier's name is carved on a leather patch on the upper rear of the backpack. It appears to be "Roger Staber". Below the name is "Roches IV" and "1/9". Roches is a small municipality in Canton Bern.
