Product Description
This prototype Vetterli 1868 is in excellent condition with 95% original finish. As this is a prototype, the steel was not blued and is correctly in the white. 5/5 Bore. 5/5 Stock. Stock has very limited handling wear and has faint tiger striping. Light patina along the top of the barrel and receiver. Bore is in great shape with sharp rifling. Antique; no import engraving.
This Vetterli 1868 is a single shot, centerfire carbine. The production model Vetterli 1868 is a rimfire rifle, which makes this quite unique. This model is an early prototype (Versuchswaffe - "experimental weapon") manufactured by SIG Neuhausen, designed by Friedrich Vetterli. It has a rotating dust cover sleeve, a similar feature found on the production Vetterli Cadet model. Even though it lacks a bayonet lug, the Yatagan bayonet was intended to be issued with it.
This is a unique piece for any Swiss Vetterli collector as this is one of 21 examples produced for Italian trials, as noted in the book Schweizer Militärgewehre Hinterladung 1860-1990 by Ernst Grenacher. Please refer to the scanned page in the product photos noting this point.
Antique; no import engraving.
