Swiss Army officer's sword, model 1899. Nickel plated. There is beautiful detail work on the basket guard which includes the Swiss shield. Grip is made of stitched fishskin leather. Fishskin grip is in very good condition. Grip's wire wrapping is tight. Leather finger loop is intact. Leather washer at the ricasso.
Includes white portepee which has been discolored due to age. The leather tassel is very dry with fraying stitching. Light pitting / surface frost found throughout the grip and on the underside of the basket guard.
"40" stamp on the right side of the ricasso underneath the serial number indicates this sword was issued in 1940. Above the serial number, a Roman numeral "III" is stamped, indicating sword length (860mm / 33.9"). Three lengths were available and issued depending on the officer's leg length; size "III" is the longest length available. The left side of the ricasso is stamped with the manufacturer mark "WAFFENFABRIK NEUHAUSEN" and a Swiss military acceptance stamp.
Includes scabbard.
